Running Coach in Metro Detroit
Online coaching, local roots.
I'm Kevin Wolf, a UESCA-certified running coach based in metro Detroit. I coach runners across the country — and some of my favorite athletes are the ones training on the same roads I am.
I know the races you're training for
The Free Press Marathon isn't a normal marathon course, and it shouldn't get a normal training plan. There's a mile-long climb over the Ambassador Bridge at mile 3 that will steal your race if you attack it, a half-mile grind coming out of the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, and your GPS watch is going to lie to you underground. Most plans off the internet don't mention any of that.
Same goes for the rest of the calendar — the Brooksie Way in Rochester, the Crim in Flint, the Dexter-Ann Arbor Run, the Turkey Trot, the Martian Invasion in Dearborn, and everybody's spring Boston-qualifier attempt up at Bayshore. I build toward the race you're actually running.
And I know the Michigan winter problem
Every national training plan assumes you can do Tuesday's tempo outside in February. Here, sometimes you can't. We plan for that — treadmill equivalents that don't wreck your pacing, how to adjust when the plan says 8 miles and the sidewalk says no, and how to come out of March fitter instead of just intact.
How coaching works
Everything runs through TrainingPeaks and regular calls, so we don't need to be in the same room. If you're local and want to meet up for a workout or a form check now and then, we can talk about that too.
